For this post, I need to start with a little back story to help you understand why my husband and I don’t like listening to standard children’s music favorites over and over again in the car.
Here is a picture of me and Travis at our wedding, almost 6 years ago. You can see that Travis has a mohawk and I have a fauxhawk and Russian Tea Veil. We had a punk rock themed wedding because we both love Christian punk and ska music, and over the last 6 years that hasn’t changed. But now that we have children, we have to compromise because even though both of our girls know how to properly rock out… they need age appropriate music they can sing along with and learn things from. So we are constantly on a quest to find music they like that won’t drive us crazy. Obviously this is really important on a road trip where everyone will probably be listening to music all together (sometimes repeatedly).
So without further ado, here are four music choices the whole family will enjoy, including mom and dad. And, they are all under $10, so they won’t break your budget.
1. Here Come the 123s by They Might Be Giants
This CD ROCKS!! At one point we played the DVD (that comes free with the CD!!) every night as part of Ksena’s bed time routine, and the music is just as fun in the car. My personal favorite is “Seven Days Of The Week (I Never Go To Work).”
2. Phineas and Ferb the CD
There are several P & F CDs out now, but this one has a lot of our favorite songs from the first season of the show, including “S.I.M.P. (Squirrels in my Pants),” which still makes us laugh even though we have heard it a zillion times (hyperbole? yes.). One of the best things about Phineas and Ferb is the music, so why not add this to your road trip playlist?
3.Here Come the ABCs by They Might Be Giants
Although I don’t like this one as much as the 123s, it is still awesome, and it has helped Ksena remember letters as well. Does it get points for the educational bonus? You bet. Songs like “LMNO” and “E Eats Everything” will have everyone in your car singing and dancing along.
4. Yo Gabba Gabba, Music is Awesome 3
My friend Mindy recently turned me onto Yo Gabba Gabba, and I have to admit that the songs are really catchy and fun. Our kids love them, and Travis and I have been singing them around the house for the last few days non-stop. This show in general is pretty awesome, and with one of the creators being the singer of the Aquabats, there is a fun feel to the show that reflects their awesome style of music and performance. I double dog dare you not to get, “Follow the Oskie Bugs” stuck in your head.
So there you go, 4 CDs that will keep your family happy and entertained in the car, because good tunes go a long way! And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Ultimate Family Road Trip Series.
